Where to eat

The Three Horseshoes Inn, Groesffordd
Telephone 01874 665672

5 minutes by car, the food is truly wonderful, also a pub, booking advisable. From the house, turn left to Brecon and stay on the road for 2 miles until reaching Groesffordd. Stop when you see cars parked and a bus shelter on the left. The restaurant is up a slight hill on the left.
Dog friendly in the bar.

The Royal Oak, Pencelli
Telephone 01874 665396
A local you can walk to along the canal – 20 minutes. A very friendly (and popular) pub with a beer garden bordering the canal where one can eat as well. Good pub food, generous opening times. A minute by car turning right from the house. It's on the right as you reach Pencelli with a car park to the left.
Completely dog friendly.

The New Inn, Bwlch
Telephone 01874 730215
Another really good pub with really good food and beer to match. Small and popular so book if you want to eat. Life saving to fall into after walking along the Bwlch ridge. On the A40 towards Abergavenny, a 10 minute drive.
They love dogs too.

The Travellers Rest at Talybont-on-Usk
Telephone 01874 676233
A classy small restaurant with rooms, and therefore popular. Thoroughly recommended. Five minutes by car, turn right from the house, through Pencelli and it's the last house on the right in Talybont.
Good parking.

In Brecon

In Brecon the best food is at the Cathedral, in The Hours Cafe and Bookshop.
The Brecon Tap in the town centre is a good place to stop for a pie and pint.
Both happy with dogs while eating outside.

Gastro/Michelin

For full blown gastro pub/Michelin meals there is the Griffin at Fellinfach 01874 620111
six miles towards Hereford.
Dogs, only in the bar and one dining room.

The Walnut Tree outside Abergavenny at Llandewi Skirid 01873 654797.
No dogs.

Both need booking, sometimes well in advance.

Rural idylls

Moving towards rural idylls, The Clytha Arms 01873 840206 six miles beyond Abergavenny towards Monmouth is one of the best country pubs by miles.
Dog heaven.

And for pure whimsy The Goose and Cuckoo high in the hills above Abergavenny closes the door on the rest of the world 01873 880277. Take a book and spend all day there.
Dog heaven too.

High Tea at The Angel

And finally, the best and most expensive teas in South Wales can be enjoyed at Angel Hotel in Abergavenny 01873 857121. And again, prudent to book.
